SIA 500 Standard "Barrier-Free Construction"
Background
The SIA 500 standard for barrier-free construction defines how the principle of equal access must be implemented in the field of building construction. The goal of this standard is to ensure independent accessibility within the built environment for all individuals, particularly for those with motor or sensory impairments, as well as for people carrying luggage, strollers, or bulky items.
The requirements for accessibility vary depending on the type and purpose of the building. Therefore, the standard categorizes buildings into three groups:
- Publicly accessible buildings
- Residential buildings
- Buildings with workplaces
The terms "conditionally permissible" and "preferably" allow for a flexible approach in meeting accessibility requirements based on practical considerations. The obligation to build barrier-free is regulated by federal, cantonal, and municipal laws and regulations.
