• Stairlift for straight stairs: from approx. 6,000 CHF for one floor
• Stairlift for curved stairs: from approx. 10,000 CHF for one floor
• Inclined platform lift for straight stairs: from approx. 12,000 CHF for one floor
• Inclined platform lift for curved stairs: from approx. 17,000 CHF for one floor

Who covers the costs of a stairlift?

The coverage of stairlift costs depends heavily on individual circumstances. Depending on personal situations, government aid programs or independent organizations may offer financial support. For example, the Invalidity Insurance (IV) may cover the costs of a stairlift in the event of an accident. However, seniors typically have to bear the costs themselves.

Some insurance providers offer financial assistance (see section on financial aid through insurance). If you are facing financial difficulties, it may be worthwhile to contact the following organizations for advice and potential financial support:

• Pro Senectute (for individuals of retirement age receiving AHV benefits)
• Pro Infirmis (for individuals of working age)
• Swiss Paraplegic Association

Financial support through health insurance

The extent to which health insurance covers the cost of a stairlift depends on various factors. Generally, costs are only partially covered and under specific conditions.

For approval, the stairlift installation must be classified as medically necessary and comply with legal requirements. Each health insurance provider decides individually on cost coverage. For example, Helsana Insurance reimburses up to 3'000 CHF for reusable assistive devices, including:

• Free-standing standing device
• Active wheelchair (also for children)
• Standing wheelchair
• Nursing wheelchair
• Electric wheelchair (including E-Fix)
• Patient lifter
• Caterpillar stairlift / stairlift
• Bath lift
• ARDOsoftum pressure relief system

For detailed information, it is advisable to check directly with your health insurance provider about potential financial contributions.

Cost coverage by the IV

The Invalidity Insurance (IV) can cover the cost of a stairlift if the person has not yet reached retirement age. The prerequisite is that there are medical reasons making daily activities unmanageable without assistive devices.

This health condition must be confirmed by a doctor and persist for more than 12 months. Additionally, the stairlift must result in at least a 10% improvement in functionality, such as enabling independent access to and from the home.

Financing through AHV

The AHV does not cover the costs of stairlifts, unlike assistive devices such as wheelchairs or nursing beds. Affected individuals are advised to contact Pro Senectute, the largest specialist and service organization for older people in Switzerland.

Depending on cantonal regulations and individual cases, stairlifts may be partially or fully financed through supplementary benefits. If the IV has already approved cost coverage for a stairlift, this support remains valid even after reaching AHV retirement age.
